PhD in Economics

Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics is 240 credit academic programme aims at enabling students to become academic experts in research and teaching in different areas of Economics.

Graduates of this program will enjoy the opportunity of working as faculty members at higher education institutions. The programme is designed for applicants with both a BSc or BA and a MSc or MA in Economics and Finance.  Applicant’s need a minimum average mark of 60% at the undergraduate level, and 70% average at the MSc/MA level. The student needs to submit an English language proficiency of PTE 50% or any equivalent exam score. English foundation program is also available at UKH (check website for more details). The minimum duration of this programme is six semesters but can be extended to a maximum of ten.

 


Structure

The programme starts with a proposal submitted by the applicant followed by a presentation at the department. The department verifies the proposal and allocates a supervisor to supervise the student based on expertise. With the consent of both the supervisor and the student, a second supervisor (external) is assigned with aligning themes and expertise. In parallel with working on the proposal, the student must successfully pass one semester (60 credits) in the first part of the first academic year. Four thesis-tailored modules, normally each bearing 15 credits, will be offered by the department for the student to undertake. In order to successfully pass the semester, the student must score at least 60% in each module and no less than 70% on the average of final mark in the four modules. Assessment for modules could range from exams, projects, reports and assignments. After successfully passing the semester, the PhD candidate in Economics is required to submit a full proposal by the end of the academic year. Based on the evaluation of the proposal recommendations suggested by the Post Graduate evaluation committee, the student starts writing a 180 credits thesis, which will be no less than 60,000 words. During the thesis writing period the PhD candidate will be required to publish two articles in reputable international journals (UKH standard). After submitting the thesis to the department, the PhD candidate in Economics will need to defend his/her thesis in an academic viva voce. The examining committee will comprise of a chair, three examiners (one external) and the two supervisors, who are entitled each to make a brief comment at the end of the examination if needed.

 


Admission Criteria

a.     A candidate seeking admission to the programme of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics at UKH must have MPhil/MA/MSc with a minimum score of 70% or an equivalent GPA and BA/BSc with a minimum score of 60% or an equivalent GPA from any recognized institution, in a field of study relating to the respective subject for which s/he is seeking admission provided that a competent supervisory committee can be made in accordance with the UKH rules.

b.    A score of at least 50 in a Pearson Test of English (Academic), or the equivalent in IELTS or TOFEL examination.

c.    Candidates seeking admission to a PhD programme will be required to undertake an interview.
