BSc. Mining Engineering

Overview

One of the former programmes within the Natural Resource Engineering & Management Department was “Mineral Resources Engineering”, which has been changed to Mining Engineering (ME) with the necessary modifications. This new title is better recognized worldwide; although it has almost same meaning.

 

The new curriculum of Mining Engineering is enriched by the necessary elements from the geological science discipline in order to meet the needs of the Kurdistan Region. It is a significant step towards creating a technical manpower and infrastructure for the prospective Mining Industry.  It is highly anticipated that the newly designed programme of ME will play a vital role in identifying, evaluating and harvesting the Mineral Wealth of the Kurdish Region in the North of Iraq.

 

Moreover, this program will help in restructuring the School of Science and Engineering so that it can offer a more substantial and better integrated arrangement of programmes.

 


Structure


The structure of the ME Programme will be almost similar to all other engineering programmes which are running in the School of Sciences and Engineering. It includes four academic years and each year includes two semesters, collecting 650 Credits.

 

Students graduated from the science division of secondary schools can apply to join the ME Programme at UKH having a minimum score of 70% overall and in science subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics.

 

The prospective students also need to pass an English language test; according to UKH entry requirements. Those who cannot pass the English Test, they can follow the Foundation Programme for one year at UKH in order to get the required level of English.

 

Upon graduation, students of the ME Programme will be granted a B.Sc. degree in Mining Engineering.


Modules

The details of the planned modules within the ME Programme in each year and each semester are mentioned in the attached Appendix 1 (Page 5). Some of the modules, especially, at UG 1 and UG 2 are common modules with other engineering programmes in UKH.

 

A summary of credits and teaching hours including theory and lab is presented in Table 1.

Skills Development

Study in ME Programme will develop skills of students in different mining aspects as well as in basic modules like: Mathematics, Physics, English Language, General Knowledge. After graduation students will be able to:

 

-        Recognize different types of soils and rocks which are available in the Kurdistan Region,

-        Evaluate the economic potential of available mineral deposits (both metallic and non-metallic) in the Kurdistan Region,

-        Work in cement and brick plants; as mining engineers,

-        Work as Quality Conrtorl and Q Assurance officers in all plants and projects which deal with Earth materials,

-        Work in all mines and quarries,

-        With experience, they can design, build and operate mines,

-        Join post graduate studies in universities all over the world.


Assessment

In each semester coursework, Mid-term and Final exams will be given to the students. UKH policies for progression will be followed in this matter. The details of the grading scheme are given in Table 2.

Note

 

NB Decimal places above or below .5 will be rounded to the higher or lower full mark (for example a mark of 54.5 will be rounded to 55, whereas a mark of 54.4 will be rounded to 54. UKH has a policy NOT to condone "near-pass fails" so the only adjustment to marks awarded by the original marker(s) will be the automatic rounding outlined above.


Dissertation

The UG 4 students should submit a thesis which deals with a relevant subject related to Mining Engineering projects. It is recommended students follow a project which can be applied in the Kurdistan Region. Each student should choose a topic and a supervisor from the staff of the Natural Resource Engineering & Management Department, more specifically from the ME Programme. The chosen subject should not be a previously existing one, unless acceptable changes are provided using updated techniques and/ or computer programs.    


Admission Criteria

Admission requirements are: 

  1. Secondary school certificate, attained within the last five years and with a general high school score of 70% and above.
  2. A minimum of 70% score in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
  3. Minimum English Language requirement is 45 in PTE, 47 in Versant; 5.5 in IELTS or 64 in ibt-TOEFL.
  4. Scheduled Interview 

Note: Conditional Offer may be given to applicants who submit an equivalent score of 45 PTE and above by taking the Versant English Placemnet Test from Pearson.

  47 Versant score is equivalent to 45 PTE
