BSc in Architectural Engineering and Sustainability
program, BSc in Architectural Engineering and Sustainability aims to graduate architects
who are strongly related to local rich heritage, and are able to
create attractive built environment that can sustainably communicate
with the society and meets the international expectations of the
3rddecade of the 21stcentury.
Commission on Environment and Development has put forth a definition of
sustainability “as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, and the growing
understanding of the negative impact that buildings have on the environment,
made architects seek new approaches and techniques to make buildings more
this very old part of the world where the first traces of
built environment were found, local inhabitants managed
to find sustainable ways for survival for thousands of years. UKH
program,BSc in Architectural Engineering and Sustainability endeavors
toimprove the education and training of future architects to enable them to
meet the expectations of 21st century
for sustainable human settlements in every cultural heritage.
vision for Architectural Engineering matches the one stated in UNESCO\UIA
charter for architectural education that states “We, the architects, concerned
for the future qualitative development of the built environment in a
fast-changing world, believe that architecture involves everything that
influences the way in which the built environment is planned, designed, made,
used, furnished, landscaped and maintained”.
Engineering is a challenging, but rewarding profession which requires
well-educated, young men and women with multi-disciplinary approaches.
Adding sustainability as an additional criterion, may give UKH
graduate architects more chances to cope with
local and international perspectivesfor future built
The training will start with the design of simple abstract forms
in year one and end with the individual graduation project in year five.
During the study course, the student will experience the design of various
building-type projects, like, simple sheds, dwelling
units, schools, recreation centers, hotels, hospitals, planning for housing projects
and urban district designs.
The theoretical part of the program will cover principles of
history and theory of art and architecture, principles of geometry
and engineering, and social, economic, and political principles for planning
sustainable built environment, while in design
studios, students will be trained in how to
apply theoretical background to create attractive forms and spaces that can
fulfill functional requirements in a sustainable manner.
The program aims to admit students
for the academic year 2019-2020.BSc in Architectural
Engineering and Sustainability is designed to go with UNESCO\ UIA charter for
architectural education that consists of a five-year program actualizing
Vitruvius triangle of commodity, firmness and delight.
UKH, BSc Architectural Engineering and Sustainability targets
developing students architectural sustainable creative design skills
supported byoral and written capabilities within a local
and international background of standards, regulations, ethics
and moral of the profession of Architecture and Engineering.
The average weekly hours of theory and studio (lab) teaching
for each semester is 22 hours. The five-year program is
based on 156 credit hours, equal to780 UKH
In addition to the architectural courses, the
program consists of six university core courses of Math, Computer Skills,
English and Moral Reasoning (14 out of 156 credit hours),in
addition to six common courses of structure and strength of materials,
concrete design, steel design and surveying (11 out of 156).These are
shared with the civil engineering program.
The modules are designed to develop from
abstract principles to concrete cases and project designs. The
five-year program with 59 modules and 780 credits, is
built around the prerequisites of architectural design studio on one hand, and on
the other hand, the hierarchy of history, planning and
UKH, BSc in Architectural
Engineering and Sustainability graduates,
are prepared to comply with the local professional
bodies (like Kurdistan Engineering Union and Iraqi Engineering Union) requirements to get
the rank of assistant engineer, and also be able to apply for the membership of
international professional bodies like UIA (international architects’
be able to apply for membership in other countries professional bodies. This will be achieved through introducing
students during their five years of study to virtual design projects and also
through compulsory summer training programs at local design firms or
construction sites. Also some students may be able
to develop their skills even more by joining
elective students exchange programs and internship courses.
Architectural Engineering and Sustainability Program
targets continuous assessment of gained knowledge and skills via assignments
presentations and quizzes in addition to final exams in case of pure theoretical
modules, while in case of mixed theoretical and practical modules like design
studio the continuous assessment will be for exercises as class work, home-work
and design stages for virtual projects that grow gradually from the first
concept sketch to the final project design.
